Dyslexia Support and Tutoring
Dyslexia is a learning disability that is believed to be inherited. Most dyslexics have average or above average intelligence, but typically struggle with reading, writing, spelling, maintaining good penmanship, and sometimes language and math.
Characteristics of dyslexics may include:
- Poor phonological processing
- Weak memory skills
- Slow and laborious reading
- Poor sight word recognition
- Memorizes words
- Often substitutes or skips words
- Usually has weak visual-motor skills
WSEA offers multisensory programs to help students in Grades K-12 with dyslexia and reading or language based learning disabilities. Based on the Orton-Gillingham approach, the Wilson Language Program teaches students to decode in a multisensory format to help learn the 6 syllable types in the English language. Students learn how to divide big words according to the pronunciation for each type of syllable, thus breaking the guessing habit. This program is a step-by-step systematic program, in which students must master each step before moving on. Each step is carried over to reading, writing, and spelling. Private tutoring is recommended at least twice a week with 2-3 times a week in the summer.
Our workshop, Phonics is Phun, is a modiﬁed Wilson workshop for students in Grades 2-4. It is offered both in the summer in a 1-week format, and in the winter in a 6-week Saturday workshop.
Another multisensory program to help build decoding skills, sight word recognition, comprehension, ﬂuency, and spelling is Phonics for Reading for elementary students. This program is highly successful because of its repetition and its short, consistent format. Students may complete part or all of the program to make gains.
