Mneumonic Devices

Need a strategy for memorizing and organizing material? Mnemonic devices can help. These devices are simply memory tools that aid students in the retention of information. Students who struggle with committing information to memory can use these devices to aid them in memorization. In order to file information into long term memory, it helps to connect it to prior knowledge or existing memories. By using some of these devices, a student can help to process new information and store it for long term memory usage. Some examples of these tools include: acrostics, rhymes, lists, songs, diagrams, acronyms and phrases. When creating one of these devices, it is often the silly or most unusual phrases or ideas that will stick with you and help to jog your memory: so be creative! One such device is used for students to remember the colors of the rainbow by recalling the acronym, Roy G. Biv, which stands for red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Memorizing long bits of information can be frustrating and difficult, but using mnemonic devices can help to make the process fun and stress free.
